Table Mountain Hiking: Platteklip, India Venster, Skeleton Gorge (And How Not to Die)
Table Mountain is not a stroll. It’s a proper mountain with proper consequences. People get lost, dehydrated, and rescued every year. It’s also one of the best day hikes you’ll do – if you pick the right route and don’t be an idiot. Here’s what you need to know.
Platteklip Gorge: The Straight-Up Grind
The most direct route to the cable car. Steep. Rocky. Exposed to the sun. Start before 8am or you’ll fry. Two to three hours up if you’re fit. Most people take the cable car down. No scrambling, but your legs will know they did something. Bring water. More than you think.
India Venster: For When Platteklip Feels Too Easy
Hands-on scrambling, exposure, and views that’ll make you stop and stare. Less crowded than Platteklip. Only do it if you’re comfortable with heights and have decent shoes. First time? Consider a guide. This isn’t the route to “figure out as you go.”
Skeleton Gorge: From Kirstenbosch to the Top
Starts in Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden – so you’re already somewhere beautiful. You climb through forest, then rock, to Maclear’s Beacon (the highest point on the mountain). Slippery after rain. Pair it with a walk across the table top to the cable car and you’ve got a full day. A good one.
Don’t Be That Guy: Safety and Common Sense
Check the weather. The mountain closes in high wind or when the tablecloth’s down. Tell someone your route and when you expect back. Water. Sunscreen. A warm layer – it’s colder up top. Phone charged. Hike with someone if you can. If you’re not sure, take the cable car up and walk down Platteklip, or hire a guide. The mountain’s not going anywhere. Your ego can wait.
